Wood movement and battens
In a recent project posting a lumberjock had used battens to flatten a curling sign he had built. It brought to mind an experience I had using battens. When I retired from teaching, I got a part time job at a local wood shop. It was like I died and went to heaven. Using great power tools with wood that I didn’t have to pay for, who could want for more. One of the first things that struck me was the tremendous amount of scrap generated by the shop. I could not bring myself to toss wood into the dumpster, so with the boss’s and my wife’s permission I carried home a load of oddball pieces almost every evening.All of the doors we made were cope and stick.
