Guards, etc…may not be visible in the pictures. This is written for woodworkers of all skill levels. But,please keep in mind that this is not woodworking #101.I am writing this in a step by step manner that should be easy for a beginner to follow, but some basic understanding of tools and terminology is required.I ask that the ...

My Sharpening Station Copyright 2-11-2007 Karson Morrison

1020 days ago by Karson | 30 comments »

I’ve noticed some Blogs and questions about sharpening chisels and I thought I give you my experiences and what I’ve designed. I’m getting ready to teach a sharpening workshop for the Mason-Dixon Woodworkers club and I was working on my setup and techniques. I own the Tormek Sharpening System , the Makita Sharpening System . I’ve used The Scary Sharp System and I build a modified Scary Sharp setup using cast iron plates and silicon carbide granules on the coarser grits and diamond paste...

Kitchen Remodel #1: Buffet and Hutch

915 days ago by Karson | 6 comments »

My wife says I can’t do anything else before I start on her Kitchen. Well except for her hall table and ??. Of course there is also the Summer Contest. This is going to be a multiple phase project. I need to do something with the floor. We are on a cement slab floor and it is killing both of our legs. The kitchen had a Pergo floor when we bought the house, but we had a frozen water line before we moved in and the Pergo floor got curled edges, so it was all pulled up. I don’t...

Fixing a Sagging Router Table Top

444 days ago by Karson | 12 comments »

The router table that I use is attached to my table saw. It sits on an angle iron support attached to my Incra TSII fence system (Upgraded to LS). To the right of the table surface. The top surface is two layers of mdf glued and screwed together, with Formica on top, bottom and 4 sides. The surface is 40” X 36. But since it is very heavy and especially with the 3HP router hanging in the middle with a Version 1 of the Jessem Router Lift, it sages. The table always sagged, s...

Scope of work: Replace transom (subject to change)Vessel: 56’ Schooner Material: Sapele So, we’re a couple of weeks into our repair and restoration class here at the “boat school” and we have something like 8 boats we’re working on between the 16 students in the class. A Roman Plane - my 21st century re-creation #1: Preparing some steelwork

537 days ago by YorkshireStewart | 14 comments »

It must be about four years since I first had a vague idea of reproducing this Roman plane from around the second century AD. The original has an ivory infill body, and is remarkably complete. I gained permission from the curator of the Guildhall Museum in Beverley, East Yorkshire, England, to take some measurements and photographs when the plane was removed from its environmentally controlled cabinet for its periodic inspection. This blog is where I originally touched on the subject, an...

Walnut Coffee Table Construction

566 days ago by Woodhacker | 13 comments »

When I returned to woodworking several years ago my nephew had been talking about a particular style of “coffee” table he’d seen online somewhere and was describing it to me. Since he’d just announced plans to marry, I told him I’d make him, and his fiancée, the table as a wedding gift. He showed me some online photos of the table, which I used as the basic, general design plan. The joinery I chose is original but the style was taken from the photos. This piece is the result: ...

Handplane Restoration #1: Planes, Planes, Planes

984 days ago by WayneC | 19 comments »

After a long week at work, I decided it was time to start the process of restoring my bench planes. I have been collecting them for a while with the intent of getting a good set of operational hand planes. I am hoping I will get a good set of usable planes at a reasonable cost. Currently, I have the following size planes set aside for restoration: #3, #4, #4 1/2, #605, #5 1/2, #6, #7 and #8. All of these are Stanley except for the #8 which is a Sargent VBM 428. The #4 1/2 and t...
