no previous part Part 1 of My Joinery Journey series no next part

These beautiful saws arrived in the mail a few days ago, a Lumberjock care package from TerryR. Terry was the recipient (poor guy) of the plane I made for the 2013 Hand Plane Swap. He found out I didn’t have any (real) hand saws and determined to rectify said deficiency. I was speechless when I saw them (pun not intended). Between work and a fall on the ice I wasn’t able to try them out until today. With my husband instructing and offering needed advice, I cut my first blind mortise and tenon joint.

Scrap pieces of pine. Yes, it’s so loose I have to hold it together in the last picture there. I’m one of those hands on learner types and I learned a lot by doing this. Practice will make better, not perfect. I am going to allow myself that. To practice without the expectation of perfection. That’s a lesson I’m sure I’ll need reminded of over and over again. I am learning (and forgetting) so much here at Lumberjocks and meeting some of the greatest people. I really appreciate the community and atmosphere. I can never pay back so I look forward to the time when I can pay it forward!

God bless the both of you for paying to each other. You’re off to a fine start and can put perfection in your expections list for use of the saws. Ya know you’ve got some really premium equipment.

It’s nice when life and woodworking become the same, a great experience.

Oh, rats, that’s where my new Veritas saws ended up! I thought I mailed ya that box of pine cut-offs! LOL

Candy, please enjoy them, and wear those teeth out! Hey, in that last photo, you could add glue and a clamp, and we’d never see any gap…looks like you are doing great already!

Handtooler, 10+ on the premium equipment! I checked out your blog and found the FWW link for the shoulder plane That’s a great reference for when I get one.
CampD, Smiles back atcha!
Double DD, yes it is.
Red, I’m taking LOTS of notes on the Furniture Making Forum!
Waho, this is an awesome place!
O Terry, I’ve destroyed the boxes and cannot return them (well I cut the tape on the end). Heeheehee Jim(Hubby) said the same thing about glue and clamp!
Jim, I can’t hardly believe that! Merry Christmas to you!
Thanks, everyone, for the encouragement!

Jim, She’s suppose to stay out of joints, and stay in the shop, not even the kitchen. Pun intended.

Good stuff. On your next joint, try something harder than pine. Should leave a much better fit and finish.

Candy, What a really nice gift. You must have been a good girl this year. I don’t even have saws like that and I’ve been playing around at this stuff for more than 50 years. Every time I am in Highland Hardware in Atlanta, I drool over them.

Merry Christmas

@Candy—I understand how great it feels to be the recipient of unexpected goodness. I got a package from terryR a few weeks ago too. I’m starting to think that Santa moved from the North Pole to northern Alabama . . . Come to think of it, I’ve never seen Santa and terryR at the same time—hmmmm.

@terryR—Good on ya, again!

Candy,

We always enjoy reading such good stories. We’ll be looking forward to the results. And after you’ve mastered them and we see your name in all the WW magazines, Terry can take some credit for heading you in the right direction with those fine saws!

Russel, you don’t know how right you are! The kitchen is NOT this woman’s place!
Brian, next joint (unless I get side tracked again) will be … I can’t say yet. It’s a present.
Thanks Dr. Ken. Maybe it’s time to spoil yourself.
Don, as the song says: “God loves a cheerful giver!” I know Terry fits that bill to a T! Then again, so do you and a bunch of other LJ’s!
L/W, aw shucks, I’m blushing! I’ll try to not disappoint!
Joe, you have no idea! It was tough buddy!
