Box for State Fair Feb 08

Here’s a box I’m working on for the State fair in Feb 08. It’s morstly Bird’s eye maple, but will have additional woods inlaid. I added a few sketch’s to help visualize how it will look in the end. It’s really kind of hard to tell right now ….all boxy looking..

The main character of the box will be it’s curving sides. It will have curves top to bottom AND side to side, including the lid. The inlaid you see on the inside, will be revealed and actually inlaid detail on the outside once I cut the curves.

There will be burl on the inside of the lid. Anyway, here are a few pics.

Wife's Jewelry Chest

Hello All,

Sorry for the long absence. The job that pays has kept me traveling and my other on going projects (rocking chair, chess boards, and the like) are not boxes, so it’s been a rough couple months.

I started my wife’s jewlery chest (before she goes out and buys one )

The case is made from cherry. It will have 8 horizontal drawers and 2 vertical ones that will use dovetail slides as their sliding mechanisim. When you pull one of these vertical drawers out, it will pivot as seen by the sample walnut pic I made to test my idea. The pivoting left or right will enable her to hang the multitude of necklaces on either side.

The miter’d sides and top will be re-inforced with dovetail keys shortly. Basically the whole box will be hidden though as it will fit nicely in the center cubby hole of our armoire’.

Again, I apologize for my absence! More pics to follow!

ICN,

Jewelry Chest

OK…been away a little while traveling, but…back at it…Thank goodness.

Picture 1 is of the space that this new Jewelry Chest will go into. It’s the center cubby hole in the armoire, with as you can see is filled with some of my wifes jewlery still in boxes. I think it’s kinda funny, I make all these boxes and haven’t yet made one to hold all her things. maybe I’m unconciously a little scared she’ll try and fill it up.

Picture 2 is of the two boards that I just made. Originally they were 8 qtr x 16 wide by 10’ long. I ripped, resawed, jointed, glued back, planed and came up with these two beauties of cherry that will make up a lot of this chest.

It will have 8 drawers sandwiched by 2 vertical drawers that will slide out in order to hang necklaces, with a pivoting arm once the drawers are fully out to allow the drawer to pivot right or left.

Sorry for not having much more to show as I left my concept drawing at work. I’ll post it tomorrow.

Artsy Humidor

SORRY for the order…the third pic is the front :-)

Finally, here’s the humidor I’ve been working on. Although I’m very dissapointed in the finish. I tried a wipe on product, so my next task is to sand this baby down and spray it like I should have at the start. Lesson learned I guess.

Here are some more pics.

Anyone interested in making one of these, especially the latch, you can see one of last years editions of WoodCraft magazine with Bill McDowells instruction. Your on your own with the box though :-)

Humidor in the making

Here’s a Humidor I started the other day. Kind of looks real simple here, but it will be far from it when i’m done in a week or so. The sides are Jatoba, Maple guides and inlays, Wenge’ lid frame with crowning and maple medallion. It’ll have a fancy snancy (is that a word) locking mechanisim and a mechanical key lock. It will have Spanish Cedar lining on the entire inside. Dang…. I guess I ought to add a kitchen sink :-)

2006 State Fair Jewelry Box

This was last years entry. It’s curly Maple, Wenge’ and ebony for the top lid handle.

It’s curved on every side and around the lid inlays it slopes downward towards the lid medallion. The hinges were hand cut on the back because of the curve angle. This one was a bit tricky making the curves on all saides as it’s width is 12 inches and the drawer front is curved and metered to fit the box. Sort of compound curves like SWMBO’d.

Hello All,

I recently posted a lengthy WIP on this box on our neighbor forum in Australia. I enetered it in the Florida State Fair an took 1st place and Best of Show in the Fine Furniture competitions.

The tray belongs to another box just like it. The tray that goes with this box is much more detailed with ring holders. Just didn’t put it in this pic.
