Progress update:
11/14/09: Still not done with the shop; but thought I’d post what I have so far.
Pic1 – Before I started, I had a 3 car garage. The 3rd stall is what you see. It is now partitioned off. Walls are insulated at R13 and ceiling at R48. Even though the garage door is “insulated” its a major heat leaker.
Pic2 – This is in the 2 car portion of the garage and is temp storage for many of my bench top tools.
Pic3 – Pretty much the same view as Pic1. mobile wood storage on left, temp storage by the door, Clamp storage will be on the right.
Pic4 – Workbench – hand tool storage – Made a loft at 8’ above floor. It’s 4’ deep for 7 feet and 2 feet deep for 5’. yep the shop is 12’ x 21’. The peg board area will get doors. The shelf immediately above the pegboard will be home to years and years of woodworking magazines. I need to add the upper track and the sliding doors to keep the dust out of the magazines. The area was going to be dead space anyway since it’s too hard to reach with the bench there. On the right, I will be putting a drop front cabinet to hold my older PC. That way I can keep track of LJ while out in the shop.
Pic5 – A couple of storage units made from recycled wood. Trying to take advantage of vertical space. The lower unit will get doors and face frame.

It sounds as if you are making progress on your shop. I can well understand about your lack of success in getting your wife to move her car out of the garage. My wife would put me outside before she would let her truck sit in the weather. :)
Keep us posted on your progress. It is always nice to see a new shop space going up.

Well, it’s the start of labor day week end so I hope to be seeing your completed shop soon. You work all week, then you have to work on one of those rare three day weekends!!!

Would you believe that I have been working so hard at getting the place in order that I haven’t had time to snap a picture! Actually, I am making very good progress. I believe I will have some pics at the end of this weekend. I have installed some cabinets and shelves and now need to add some pegboard.

Gary, this is a nice shop space that you have. I really like the ceiling height that you have in there. I have 92” to the bottom of the floor joists and swinging a full sheet of plywood or long boards means having to dodge around light fixtures and angling boards so that they don’t hit the joists. I also like the windows that you have in the shop and the garage doors. This gives you some natural light that I find easier to work under. The storage loft was a good addition as well. It seems that there are always “non-essential” things that take up space in our shops and this lets you store them out of the way.
You have added some nice cabinetry and storage shelving to your shop that helps with keeping it organized and, to tell the truth, it does look pretty neat in there. If my wife saw how you had your shop organized she probably would give a ribbon for you organizational prowess since she is borderline OCD with respect to keeping thing neat and tidy (a condition that leads to some occasional “discussions” between us). :)
Thanks for the pictures, Gary. I enjoyed visiting your shop.

I’ve got about the same room as you: the third stall in a 3 car garage, 10×24. I’m not going to partition it off, though, because I’ve concluded that if I put the tablesaw and jointer so the feed direction is sideways, and I keep them close to the 10’ line, I can use the middle stall as infeed/outfeed space.
I also plan on a similar hardware storage setup, except I’ve been saving tin cans for months instead of plastic jars.

A very practical looking shop Gary. You should get a lot of pleasure out of it.

Thanks for the link Gary. I work out of a garage too. It’s a single car garage. You couldn’t get a single car in there, even when it was empty. If I drove in, I couldn’t get out of the car, because a buttress prevented the doors opening. So I had to get out, and then push the car fully in, to close the garage door.
Life was, and still is, too short. The car sits on the drive where it drains well and doesn’t rust. I use the garage for a workshop. The biggest advantage is the metal, south-facing door. Keeps humidity way down and tool-rust is never a problem. Disadvantage. It’s way too small. Come to think of it, what workshop isn’t too small?
Thanks again and be grateful for at least a two-car garage!
Regards
John

Gary,
Looks good, I like all the shelving. I really like the organized look, that’s the way I try to keep things, but often time things will be added or moved and I end up having to reorganize once more. You might want to build a cart for that belt sander, it’s pretty heavy to be moving on and off the shelf, and if that’s a craftsman jointer I rember reading the specs, isn’t that around 105 lbs??? Well it was worth the wait, looks great!
