« Part 2: Hinge Part 3 of tea box series Part 4: Hinge and hinge stop assembly »

since my last entry I’ve spent several short sessions in the shop.
I cut the mortise for the hinge into the back panel

The top was built next. Cut the rails from one piece of lumber so that the grain at the 45s matched as close a possible.

Next came the assembly of the of box. The previous owner of our house left quite a bit of hardwood scraps in the shop. I made the bottom from a piece of what might be maple (?) cut dados in the sides, front and back of the box and glued it up.

Chiseled the mortise to fit the hinge in the top

Last night I cut the legs and attached them using dowels and glue, pinned (not glued yet) the hinge to the box and lid and checked function. Scraped all surfaces to a smooth finish and cut dividers out of some unknown type of wood, again using some scrap material.

Still a bit of sanding to do on the dividers and the finishing before final pinning and glue up of hinge.
I’m thinking amber shellac to finish?

Getting closer to completion…

Great progress…. Doing a hell of a job ! Yep, I like amber shellac on walnut and I think you will too. Good choice for finish.
