Milling #1: It begins....

I think I mentioned in my last blog that I love hearing/reading/seeing about wood gloats and also logs to lumber blogs. I haven’t done much in the way of blogs but, better late than never.

A few weeks ago, me and dad went wood cutting. I usually come along to look out for fallen trees to take home and stick on the lathe. Lucky I went this particular time.
there was a tall skinny, and by that I mean about 20m tall by about 250mm diameter, unidentified tree laying over a track. someone had already cut out a section of it so I took it home.

yeah yeah, It looks pretty small but its exiting for me

I dont have a bandsaw (yet, very soon) so I took it over to a freinds house and cut it up on his.

the best boards

the smaller boards

the real small boards

These boards were quater sawn so the boards aren’t very wide. Next time I’ll probly flat saw them to get wider boards.

the turning blanks
there were more but they mysterously dissapeared…(couldn’t wait for them to dry)

the bowl blank

group shot

well, thats one out of the way. as soon as I get my bandsaw I’ll move on to THESE

still not sure what the wood is but I’ll post a forum topic with pics of the wood, bark and leaves. If anyone’s got any ideas feel free to tell.

Found/Given Wood #1: Camphor Laurel-YES!

Trying to start a blog kinda like Gary Fixler’s. Those types of blogs really interest me and I thought I’d share my own stories. I haven’t done much blogging so laugh quietly if I do something wrong.

A few weeks ago, our nieghbours came over for a BBQ. We were talking about my woodwork and Michael mentioned some camphor laurel trees that they were clearing at his work, he offered to bring me some back.

So I was thinking he might bring back a piece of a branch or something; got a surprise when he opened his ute and I found this

Trolley for scale

Cut up

Theres a little bit of cracking but I’ll get what I can out of it. It will be mostly turning blanks but a might do some boards.

Photography #1: The light tent

hey everyone,

about a week ago I posted a bowl here and one of the comments was about the reflection on the work and how it spoils the piece. So I remembered a tutorial about making your own light tent which diffuses the light evenly throughout the piece.

Since somebody allready blogged the process (SEE HERE), I didn’t bother with the construction of it, but thought I’d just share it with you and show some before and after pics.

The light tent

camphor bowl before (with editing)

camphor bowl after (with no editing what so ever)

jarrah bowl before (with editing)

jarrah bowl after (with NO editing)

You can allready see a huge improvement and the after shots haven’t even been edited yet!

The only other thing I need to do is get a bigger piece of cardboard for the background because you can see some of the tent in the after shot of the camphor bowl

And thankyou Sharad for commenting on the reflection which is why I made this light tent.
