hey everyone,
about a week ago I posted a bowl here and one of the comments was about the reflection on the work and how it spoils the piece. So I remembered a tutorial about making your own light tent which diffuses the light evenly throughout the piece.
Since somebody allready blogged the process (SEE HERE), I didn’t bother with the construction of it, but thought I’d just share it with you and show some before and after pics.

The light tent

camphor bowl before (with editing)

camphor bowl after (with no editing what so ever)

jarrah bowl before (with editing)

jarrah bowl after (with NO editing)
You can allready see a huge improvement and the after shots haven’t even been edited yet!
The only other thing I need to do is get a bigger piece of cardboard for the background because you can see some of the tent in the after shot of the camphor bowl
And thankyou Sharad for commenting on the reflection which is why I made this light tent.

I don’t know one end of a camera from the other, and I’m not concerned enough the lighting effects and how I should get studio quality pictures to show here.
I do know you knock out some awesome projects and I wish I had that kind of talent.
I’m saving up for a lathe and plan to bug you with a few questions when I can.
Keep up the good work Brody.
And thanks for sharing.

Great job! Lighting makes all the difference in the world. I think diffuse/indirect/soft lighting is the way to go.
Thanks for sharing!

Nice job getting it done with a cheap fix. I purchased a pop up tent w/ two light stands and I was quite disappointed in my results. The tent gave a nice mellow glow, but the lighting was too subtle and did not show any of the intense grain pattern and the colors were muddy. I will need to change my light source for the tent for sure.
I usually use my dining table with a background cloth of grey microsuede fabric. My light source are ceiling mounted halogen track lights, so I have 5 glare spots to try to avoid. I turn my cane in the most beneficial direction and try to avoid scratching it against the legs of the tripod, as I have to do some pretty odd angles to get the glare, shadows and background just right. I’m having to stick with this method for now as it gives me the clarity of the grain until I can figure something else out.

Thanks Brody, I’ve always had a problem with pictures and lighting. I’m going to give it a try, and by the way, your turnings are great!

Makes a huge difference in the pics. Great job on finding a solution and posting the link for the rest of us.
You turn very beautifull stuff, and we want to see ALL of it!
Keep it up.
