New use for Vet Wrap

I heard about Vet Wrap from a friend and got some. Great stuff. Basic use is for wrapping the legs of horses but it has other uses. It sticks to itself when wrapped. I use it to wrap my thumb when I am carving with a knife. If there is a slip the wrap saves the thumb. Also any time I have a finger cut and apply a bandaid I cover that with some Vet Wrap and the bandaid will last most of the day while working in the shop. It is available at most tack shops or, I guess, from a veterinary. I got 2 rolls near Lancaster, PA. for about 1.75 per roll and a roll will last for quite a while.

Photo uploading problems

I have been encountering some problems when trying to upload project photos & would welcome any assistance I can get. First, photos look good in PICASA which I am using but when uploaded they are very dark. Any way to manipulate to get better looking shots? Second, in PICASA the shot (a vertical) is in good correct position but when uploaded it is laying on its side. Does that mean only horisontal shots can be used. Any help will be welcomed.

Shopsmith

I am going to have to rearrange my shop to accommodate my recent shoulder surgeries. Part of that will be to sell my Shopsmith along with some accessories. The motor was sent back to Shopsmith about 5 years ago for overhaul & since has had about 30 hours of usage.Unit is is good condition. Not as active as I was when I bought it. I am located in Collegeville, PA 19426. If anyone in that general area is interested in details they are welcome to contact me. Thanks.

Old age & tools

Since I have had both shoulders operated on this year & am under surgeon’s orders not to overdo it, it appears I will have to modify my shop. I will probably not be working on large projects for some time so will concentrate on smaller projects when I’m allowed back in the “man cave”. I will also be thinking of selling my Shopsmith & accessories in favor of some smaller benchtop tools. Mentioned this to several local friends & they are getting the word out for me. It has been a useful tool but some of the setups will be difficult for me to achieve. I suspect there are a few others in the group who have also made accomodations due to age or physical problems. With any luck I will post some info & photros of the new arrangement when I have had time to make the changes. So I guess its “updates as they occur” for now.

I posted my last blog out of frustration. Doing physical therapy but not allowed to drive, can’t be in the shop, etc. I was surprised to hear from anyone and surprised that anyone would even notice my blog of complaint. My sincere thanks to the folks who took the time to send words of encouragement. I have about 6 more weeks of PT and then I may be able to post a new project or two. Again thanks!

I live in an area where there is an A.C.Moore arts & crafts store. Frequently they will have a sale on small foam brushes (usually 20 for $1.00). I buy these primarily as one use brushes for staining small items. Use & toss.
Then I realized that by taking pliers I could separate the used foam from the wood handle and “voila!” – I had a short dowel I could use in wood joining. We get too soon old & too late smart.

Buying sandpaper

Just want to share a good experience in buying sandpaper goods. I want to Gettysburg to visit an old friend & while there I stopped in at Red Hill Corporation. They sell mostly abrasives & have one helluva big shop full to the rafters. I bought & have used some of their materials with great satisfaction. Good prices. E.g., 3×21 sanding belts 10 for $10. 5inch PSA discs $21 for 100. If anyone needs to contact they can be reached at www.supergrit.com. E-mail – redhill@supergrit.com. I was well treated by everyone there.

Old veneer

I recently was given a roll of old veneer. It had been wrapped in a large roll & the newspaper used to finish the wrap was dated 1959. It appears to be cherry ( but I am not a wood expert ) and it is about 18 inches wide & varies in length – some is about 10 ft & others are about 12 ft. What would be a good way to flatten sheets for use. I have done some minimal veneer work but most of the veneer I used was already flat. Any info will be appreciated. Thanks.

For any who indulge in box building I just read a great article in Fine Woodworking. Title – “2 Fast Ways to Build a Box”. I would recommend it to any who do box building. Jan/Feb 2010 issue, page 48, written by Bill Nyberg of New Jersey. His bio says he is the Director of Ophthalmic Photography for the Univ. of Pennsylvania’s Medical School. Gives great visuals, plans & information on his way of making boxes.
