to seal or not to seal - 5 replies

I got a bunch of free wood, not sure of species, but I guess spalted maple. It was garage kept a couple of yrs. They were huge pieces and I broke them down so I could manage them. Their moisture content is 9 – 12%. The bark is gone. Most are 12” or less long and 8” or less wide. Should I seal the ends only, seal the whole...

chatter work - 2 replies

Hi,I have a chatter tool with changeable tips. I’m not getting the results I’d like. Not sure if the lathe needs to be faster or slower? I have the tip sticking an inch out of the tool and the tool over the rest about 2 inches and slanting downward. The pic shows the results. Any advice is welcome.

logs - 18 replies

Hi,I have about 40 pieces of tree limbs. They are 12 – 18” long and a foot or so in diameter. I made a saw buck and was going to cut 4 sides off to make them roughly rectangular. My thought was to save some storage room by making them smaller and to have less shaving and turning mess when roughing. Also, my lathe is only midi size if...

daily email - 2 replies

Until a week or so ago I got daily emails from LJ. Now I don’t and I checked my spam folder to see if I mistakenly clicked an email as spam and I didn’t. I added the addy to my contacts. I don’t see a link on the site to sign up for them. Have they been done away with? Thanks,Vicki

easy wood tools vs robert sorby carbide - 20 replies

I have the Robert Sorby carbide tool with the interchangeable cutters. I don’t seem to do well with it. Maybe I need more practice. I don’t care for the distance from the wood required by the ‘head’. I did’t go with EWT in the first place as they seemed to pricey. Now I think I might like the finisher and detai...

Hi,I want to get the RIKON 70-220VSR 12-1/2” x 24” VSR MIDI Lathe and it’s on sale at Amazon for $549.99 + $19.99 shipping. It’s the lowest price I’ve seen, but I’ve only been looking a couple of months. Has anyone seen it anywhere for less? I’m so excited to maybe get this new toy!

3/8" spindle gouge - 4 replies

Hi! I need help with sharpening my 3/8” spindle gouge. I’m able to get it sharp, but I end up with a pointed fingernail or tip, rather than a rounded one. I’ve used the method of marking the part to be sharpened with a Sharpie and lining up my jig. I have the generic One way type, I think it comes from PS. I’ve also...

zoom pictures - 7 replies

When I read about a new project and want to view the pics, I used to click: zoom pictures. That would give me a window with larger pics and buttons to scroll through the whole lot. Now when i click zoom pictures, I just get ONE pic. Is there something I can do to fix this or is a web site issue?

Trex deck table - 5 replies

I’ve made several deck side tables over the years. They all look great at first and then Mother Nature wears them out. I am going to make new tables out of Trex with a tile top. I found 18” tile squares, so the top is easy. I was going to attach it to a piece of ply with Power Grab and rest it on a rabbit in the frame or on a str...

Finish work in cold weather - 17 replies

I was wondering how other folks handle staining and finishing thier projects with the cold temps. It’s my understanding that most paint, finish, etc. is to be used in 50 deg. or higher temps. So if you live where it is below 40 deg. what do you do? Keep the shop heat running? Do it in the house and put up with the smell? Wait for warm...

Paint/stain storage - 4 replies

I was wondering what folks with limited inside storage do with the paint/stain/glue/wood filler, etc. that’s been in the shop from Spring – Fall now that winter is near. I’ve always brought most of it inside, but as my supplies have increased, space to store these things inside is an issue. I’ve usually left outdoor sta...

Ryobi Drill Press - 1 reply

Does anyone have any feedback on the Ryobi 12” drill press sold at Home Depot? I have the 12” Delta variable speed and I had the famous pully problem with it. I replaced the pullys and bought a new belt and it never had the same oomph again. Now the switch is starting to go. I turn it on and it doesn’t come ON so I press th...

pre conditioner for stain - 20 replies

I finally made the move from ‘box store’ wood to REAL lumber yard wood. I still only used pine for this project, but the quality was much better. I made a little cabinet for my bathroom (I’ll send a pic when the door is on). I stained it with my usual Minwax Oak. Seems to me it’s a bit blotchy. I bought the select wh...
