I have been building custom furniture and cabinets, off and on for over thirty years.
For years I worked in the automobile industry and pursued my woodworking hobby part time. Well a few years back I had the chance to move the hobby to a full time vocation. Things were going good, had more cabinet jobs then furniture, but was making it work. I was stricly doing the remodel area and only working with the direct public.
Then the recession hit. The housing industry ground to a halt, and the cabinet builders who were servicing them had to look in other areas, or close their doors.
So as it turned out, they branched out in to the area I was servicing, and you know you can only divide the pie up so many ways. They started underbidding jobs just so they could try to stay busy and, even tho I was a one man shop, I could not stay afloat.
I took a "at home job", as a customer care rep, terrible job, hated it. Got an opportunity to get back in with a car dealership, and that lasted till January of 2014.
So now I am back to building furniture till something else appears. I have rented a space at an antique mall, and will be selling some of my Stickly, Shaker, and other reproduction pieces there.
My favorite woods are WhiteOak, Mesquite, Cherry and Walnut. My absolute favorite is Hawaian Koa, but it's rare and hard to obtain. I am set up to do veneering, and have an abundance veneer in many varieties.
I am always ready to share my knowledge, so if you are in the central Texas area feel free to come by for a visit.
