Just a plain plane

Hi all.

Well, I took the plunge and bought some 2 by maple and some 1 by purpleheart with the intention of making a wood body bench plane. The maple is a true, full 2 inches (more or less) and the purpleheart is about 7/8. I figure on splitting the PH down to 1/4 for the sideplates and using the maple for the body. No separate sole is planned. Haven’t decided on a blade yet. Might go Lee Valley as they have a local outlet…

Sounds interesting. Maple and Purpleheart I wouldn’t exactly call plain though…

I was thinking of basing the design on the Popular Mechanics online plans. Doing without the sole plate as a separate piece as both these woods are pretty hard. May inlet the sides into the body to leave a single piece on the sole if I go with a narrow enough iron. Still have to decide…
