I have purchased from Lee Valley, the Barrel Nut and Bolt combo, that is used for work bench assembly. I have used them on a bed I am making at the moment. I received a 6” hex bolt (standard 1/2 inch coarse thread) with a 25mm x 25mm brass barrel nut….or a 1 inch x 1 inch brass barrel nut. Where can I purchase the barrel nut only, in the same size, and the same material. I don’t need the bolt. I can buy truck loads of bolts any where. I have looked all over the internet…..can’t find my size. There are all kinds of 1/4-20 barrel nuts by the truck load. Please help if you can. Thanks….BigD1

The barrel nut is also known as a dowel nut and some people call them connector bolt nuts, but you are
right about the bigger ones being hard to find. I have made my own using low carbon-grade 2- bolts,
since they are usually hidden inside the wood, I never worried about the brass bit.

I know all about those barrel nuts from Sing-One-Low. And yes I would take a steel barrel nut also. And yes they are also called a SEX NUT….who knows why…...Just not having any luck in finding what I need. I’ll just keep trying. Thanks.

Big D; here is a link to a page on Evanfall Woodworks web site with a good discussion about cross dowel joinery. There are a number of links to sources for the bolts. The 25mm from Highland Woodworking does not have a standard thread.

I had a source for 3/8” & 1/2” barrel nuts but can’t seem to find it now.

It was woodpeckers.
