Oh For Keepsake!

28 days ago by thewoodwhisperer | 30 comments »

Its that time of year again: HOLIDAY PROJECT TIME! So this year, I decided to make a few little keepsake boxes, thanks to some advice from The Great WOODini. I also took inspiration from a box Nicole keeps on her nightstand and developed a new design that is much more practical for the average woodworker to make. The boxes feature a secret locking pin. Once removed, the lid slides off on a sliding dovetail. And as always with these holiday gift projects, you can modify them by trying diffe...

All in One Jig Part 1 #1: Diamonds and Triangles

56 days ago by dustbunny | 27 comments »

After posting the quilted lazy susan project, http://lumberjocks.com/projects/21623, many of you said you would like to see the jig for this project. I set out immediately to upgrade the jig. There were cuts I wanted to incorporate into this jig, and my original was warping and needed repair anyway. So here it is – 24” X 33” I am pretty proud of this jig, not only because I made it, but because the cuts made from this jig are right on the money. The first ...

Making Wood Quilt Blocks

390 days ago by WoodMosaics | 14 comments »

First of all you have to determine what shape you will need that you can make accurately and repeatedly. This is where my jigs come in. I was to poor to buy several miter gauges so I made mine out of angle iron and bar stock. I made them set close to a certain angle, adjustable just a little. This first picture shows the back side of one of my jigs on the saw. This one is set at 45° like 4 of my jigs are; (Now on any of these pictures if you want to see something closer just click on t...

Hand-cut dovetails #1: Graduation day: Hand-cut dovetails 101

351 days ago by Al Navas | 8 comments »

From my blog: I started my hand-cut dovetail journey this past September. In this post I share my graduation from Hand-Cut Dovetails-101. What a terrific day! As I have mentioned in those previous posts , I have been hand-cutting dovetails every chance I get. I prepared sycamore stock so that it would be at the ready when I have a little (or a lot…) of time to practice. Today I cut dovetails in three little practice boxes, with minimal paring on the pins. Oh – I almost forgo...

The quick and dirty instructions on how to make a zig-zag pattern cutting board. Click on the pictures to see a full size image. Choose a couple different types of hardwood. The more colors the better. Below is cherry, maple and walnut. Rip strips of wood any width so the total with is about 12”. This is the width that will fit through my planer. The beauty of this is that none of the widths have to be the same. The board shown below is made of scrape wood. If you only have shor...
