Decided to take some of your advice and buy a jig to hold my plane blades to sharpen them. WOW. Got the Veritas honing guide. Used it and within about 10 minutes (7 or 8 of which was reading the instructions) I had a very sharp cutter. I was able to use my block plane on end grain with no problem and face grain like butter. For giggles I took the rounded edge of my board and made it flat! Took no time at all. And while it’s an early success I can see more shavings in my future.

A sharp cutter sure is a thing of beauty!

Nothing like sharp tools! And that Veritas jig is surely worth it.

Yeah, it was at the advice/comments here that I picked up the same jig. Already have some diamond stones. Though for the past few months, maybe more (I’m in denial), I’ve looked at the new Marples chisels I accidentally destroyed the edge on (brads hidden out of sight) and said, “I’ll sharpen those tomorrow”... bolstered by your quick success… I think tomorrow may finally be THE tomorrow.

Scott – I’d go for it. I tuned up a pretty nasty chisel tonight and took it to the bench and chopped out small mortise. Not a perfect one, but it gave me the idea.

Wayne I won a chisel on e-bay tonight. Hoping it turns into a better buy than some of the stuff I’ve gotten off e-bay. We’ll see.

Very nice. Let me know how it turns out. I’ve had mixed results on ebay as well. I have a 9 1/4 block plane and a marking knife on their way to me from ebay sellers at the moment.

Actually – I won the plane I was bidding on not a chisel—- my sharp chisel in previous response obviously overrode my thinking. We’ll see how it turns out. It does not look in bad shape in the picture, but the one I got already did not either and it was a mess. Hopefully this turns out to be a better buy.

Wayne – it was the 5 1/4 Stanley (item 250174951535). Hope I did ok on this one. Won’t be buying any more planes for a while. I need to learn to use the ones I have——as Thomas says – I need to cut some wood. I also need to figure out which way is up on the ones I have! It’s just so darn addicting – buy one, gotta have two, buy two gotta have three. It’s not as bad as most addictions for sure, but geez sure is hard to stop.

I’ll do my best. I dug out my camera that I dropped in Vegas. I can’t get the focus to work very well. But I’ll see if I can get some pictures.
