« Part 3: Necessity is the mother of invention... Part 4 of Pergola series Part 5: After a long delay, back on the job... »

Today was the day for cutting all those really heavy boards to length, thus making them easier to handle, cut the angle to match the 10° slope of the boards and put a very simple detail on the front. All in all we had an easy day, only putting in 3 hours.

Next will be cutting the notches in all the boards to mate up with the ledger board and the two stringers. First I need to make a jig to allow cutting the notches using a router. I have ordered a a router bit with a 2 1/2” cut depth, and I’ll need to wait for that to arrive, so I’ll have a bit of time to build the jig. I’ll post photos of the jig build.

Yes it was a gorgeous day, definitely tee shirt weather, although I probably should have thought more about my choice in tee shirts. That one has now been relegated to a “work” shirt, so when i grabbed it I wasn’t thinking about the photos. Oh well…. :)

Les, How is the Pergola coming along? Have not seen any progress posted. Did you decide to go fishing for a week or 2 ?

Hi Butch,

No there’s been no progress for the last couple of weeks because I needed to order a special long router bit to cut the notches…

Well this has finally arrived, so now I can make the jig to cut the notches, but now I’m off to Virginia for 10 days, so I guess it’ll be another couple of weekends before I get back to it. But I’ll be sure to update the blog, when I start to make the jig.

Thanks for staying tuned.

Les
