Hi and welcome to my explorer guitar blog.

This is a project I started 5 or 6 years ago when I found some mahogany in my fathers garage, I built the neck mostly by handtools, finished it with nitrocellulose laquer (which sadly has cracked in some places and is currently being stripped off).

The neck is made of mahogany, a fretboard of indian rosewood, and the head veneer is also indian rosewood.

The body will be made of mahogany, and the top is figured bubinga.

I’ll post more about this and update it when something interesting happens.

Here are some photographs of where the build is currently, the neck is being refinished and the top is rough cut to shape, and has some planing to do before it is finished. Still need to buy the base wood for the body (most probably mahogany). All hardware it still to be bought and installed… so it’s not a quickie project, I’ll be happy if it is finished springtime…

Dry, the splotch below the neck is a CA glued crack due to rough handling sometime during the time this project was in hibernation.

Whetted with some turpentine to show the grain better.

The whole shebang.

Love it! I have a black ESP explorer guitar. It doesn’t sound all that good, but it looks really great. What kind of pick ups will you be using?

Thanks :)

I do love the figured/waterfall Bubinga, it’s just insane IRL where the patterns change almost chaotically when changing the angles.

@ Damage Inc.:
The pickups are not set in stone as of yet, the plan is a EMG 81/60 combo for the classic chunky Metallica sound, might be that I’ll use the dual mode EMG 81TW just for fun. But it’s not 100% that it’ll be EMG’s at all, but from the beginning the inspiration was James’ (from you username i guess you know which James I’m talking about) Ken Lawrence Explorer so the same pickup setup was the plan.
