Heart shape box

Over the years I have given this box to give to teachers that have helped my daughter, later to raise money for mission trips, and now to people that have made a difference in my life. Like the doctor that preformed the 6 heart by-passes and the nurse that helped me through the recovery room that night.

The pattern comes from an old issue of American Woodworker. I “carve” the top with a sanding disk chucked into my drill press. I let the grain of the wood dictate the shape of the “vain” on the top. All are different. Most of the time I use mahogany, but one time I made one from purple heart. Never again will I do that.

I really do not remember for it was from about 25 years ago. I just took from it the pattern and the method of making the top from the article. Let me know if you want the pattern and I will send it to you.

Jim, I really like the box and the idea behind it. I obtain a large amounts of “scrap” wood from my job and this could be an excellent use of it and to raise monies for our church outreach programs. Question, what was the particular problem with purple heart? I do use it myself, but I only have used it making guitar picks. I was wondering if there is something I need to know before using it in a larger project. Thanks for your time, and God bless!
