Ordered a new saw today. I have been using a saw my father had when I was growing up. A Delta combo unit with a TS and Jointer on one stand sharing one motor. The old saw still runs incredibly smooth, but the table moved for all height and bevel adjustments. This made it difficult to get consistently accurate cuts. Add to that the fact, there was zero dust collection – it spews dust everywhere – it frustrated me to no end.
I know it’s not the tool, but the woodworked behind the tool that gets good results, but I decided I would get more enjoyment out of having a better, more stable saw.
I tend to over analyze most things, and big purchases even more. I had a hard time deciding between used new and several brands. It came down between either a Grizzly or the Sawstop. I really struggled with the decision as I still have quite a few things I need for the shop, so popping for the SS would slow me down in terms of continued tool acquisition. The spread in price was about double between the options I was considering.
In the end, decided on erring on the side of caution and safety and ordered the SS 3hp PCS. I intend this to be the only cabinet saw I purchase. I also want my two young sons to learn woodworking right along side me in the shop. I am sure I will second guess this decision but am going to try and not look back and just focus on having fund with my new toy, err, tool.
Actually, I am very excited about the saw. I will post photos and more info once I have it in the shop.
I want to thank the folks out on the WTO Live chat area for putting up with my continued and frequent questions and discussions about saws as I progressed to the decision. I think they are more excited I finally decided than I am.
