more boxes #6: I can't stop making EZ Mitre boxes

373 days ago by Chris Cook | 16 comments »

I’ve got stacks of them and now I’ve discovered this really cool technique and the stack is getting larger! Later, I’ll build a giant box to hold my boxes! I have to thank (or blame) Martyn for getting me on the EZ Mitre box schtick I am on. I’ve looked at his website and, while I’ll never match that array of complex and w...

LJ Challenges #2: Our Memories Flipbook Is Here!

416 days ago by MsDebbieP | 17 comments »

April 1, 2012 I’m excited to announce and to show you our Memories of 2011 Flipbook. This challenge was indeed a real challenge – first determining what “2011” meant and, next, we each had to select just one project to include in the book. In the end, “2011” was a little flexible and we had a total of 72 LumberJocks’ participate. It looks like we might be repeating this challenge again next year. Below, you will find the link to the online fl...

Wooden Hinges #1: Clam Shell Hinges - yet another different wooden hinging method

429 days ago by BritBoxmaker | 22 comments »

This blog details how I made the hinges for my latest project, ‘56’ (also now used in ‘42’). In this blog I will be making one hinge, 56mm x 76mm x 6mm. I am using dissimilar woods for contrast. These are, in this case, sycamore and walnut. I work in millimetres. For those of you using inches there are 25.4 mm to the inch. There is a calculator in the pc you are using to read this blog, its not rocket science. I cut four blanks 56mm x 42mm x 3mm, two of sycamore and...

Easy. Elegant Wooden Box Hinge #1: I could kick myself

699 days ago by shipwright | 58 comments »

A few months ago I spent many many hours trying to perfectly align a set of “box joint hinges” for my project ” A Little Cabinetree” After I finally got them working I installed them on the edges of the MDF sides and doors and then veneered over the whole works. The only good part was that there were enough left over prototype parts that I could make a hinge for my next project from the cast-offs Then this week I was making a tea box for a friend and when...

Older Woodworkers I admire #4: Making a Mitered Mortise and Tenon joint with Yeung Chan

695 days ago by Tucker | 4 comments »

Yeung Chan takes us through a very nice progression of steps for a beautiful joint. I can imagine that this would take a few tries to get the method; and as always it’s all about the process with special attention to measuring, marking, and execution. This could be especially useful for Green and Green or maybe Stickley. Thanks to him for making this available in HD video. After starting the video, click the menu item to switch to 720 and then you can maximize it to fill your screen...
