Brian,
Nice find, and nice restoration on this rabbet – rebate plane. You should find it very useful in your woodworking projects. Only suggestion I might make is that you look for another one, one with a straight across iron, versus what I think I saw with your skewed iron. If I have this wrong & yours is 90 degrees to the side, seek the other, both are very handy, one across the grain, the other with it.

Oldtool,

I take it that the skewed plane which I have is better suited to working across the grain?

Brian,

Yes the skewed iron works great across the grain, and the other does a better job along the grain. In my experience, when i try to use a skewed rabbet along the grain, I get tear out, and the plane seems more difficult to handle.
I suppose by setting the iron for a very this shaving, either type can be used either way, I’m only speaking from my personal experience.
I have at least one of each type, they are fairly inexpensive & i really enjoy using old tools as much as possible.
It might be that the skewed rabbet was developed to handle tough grain, like smooth planing with the plane body skewed to slice rather than cut straight on. I don’t think there us a hard steadfast rule regarding all this, so for $10 or $20 I sought both types.
Have fun with yours & use them however you find them working to your satisfaction.
