What's needed to start - Wood burning? - 8 replies

Do I buy a kit at a craft store and go from there or is there a better way to start learning? What do I need to know? I noticed the wood burning projects here that the burned area is done on the light side, no dark burn marks, is this done with practice or is it sanded or some other thing done to it to get this effect?
