This birdhouse was made with locally cut pine, black walnut and cherry. The cylindrical head is constructed from 16 separate pine slats, turned on the lathe after glue up. The eyes are black walnut that has been treated with a solution of steel wool and vinegar to create the deep rich ebony color. A process that I tried for the first time and will use again. The beak and crest are cherry. The house is finished with spar urethane for protection from the weather. The dimensions are proportioned for chickadees. The home is located on a octagon white washed post. Chickadees enjoy!

This rustic Adirondack clock was constructed utilizing pine covered in birch, birch bark, cherry sticks under a pine cone roof. The birch bark is contact cemented on. The corner posts are glued and screwed from the interior. Some of the siding is nailed with fine airplane nails. The pine cone shingles are hot glued. The project was a lot of fun in selecting the appropriate pieces and correct natural defects in the material. The project was finished with polyurethane with the hope of some yellowing over time.

Three Mission Clocks

Mission Clock – I had some inspiration one night and designed this clock along with two others that are still on the board to build. The original design was built and I found a two defects in the original and problems in constructibility (Made up word?). Decide to work them out by building two others for gifts. The original in cherry and walnut base is my favorite with proportions of (8.25w, 6.5d,17.75h). The clock face diameter thin up the side too much so redesign included adding 3/4” width and canning walnut base as I was the only one who liked the opposing color. The clock is finished in danish oil with a quartz movement. The movement is a short swing – normal swing will tap sides “experience”.

Cherry clock with mission styling. Simple details make this a nice clock and easy build. Lines and design could be easily reconfigured to a door bell cover. Store bought clock face with quartz movement. The clock dimensions are 12 1/2” wide, 13 1/4” height, and 4 5/8” deep. I added the sketchup that I started with.

This build is from American Woodworker October 2006 build. The original was shown in sycamore. I decided to use some cherry I had on hand. If I built again I would switch the mounting bracket to a routered key way. First time I used barrel hinges – tough to drill center with the thin lid. Works nice.

Made two of these clocks, with one for a present. It is from plans by Gustav Stickley The Craftsman October or December 1905 – Design of a mantel clock. Plans are on line but will require some searching – both months are listed. This clock has simple with great lines. The clock pendulum timing using a quartz movement appears too quick and if I were to construct again would depart from original plans and lower the pendulum window.

This was my second clock project of nine over the past nine months. Once I started these clocks they get addictive, winter is long too. I guess I would call it prairie style due to the wide top. It is made of cherry with ebony plugs. It is my own design that I sketched up during a boring meeting I was sitting through. The timing on the pendulum swing is pleasing. The clock dimensions are 17.5” height, 14.5” width, and 5.5” depth. The lower ebony accent pieces are centered on the pendulum swing. A cutout encompasses the limits of the swing arm. It is finished with danish oil. The clock was a pretty easy build.

This was my first clock project. Have always like the simplicity of shaker design. The proportions and general design was from a photo of shaker clock shown on the cover of Canadian Home Workshop magazine. I chose a simpler hand design to keep it plain. It is constructed of all cherry. I have been collecting a lot of cherry short lumber and decided that clock projects would be a good use of this lumber.
