Middle School Bookcase, Built years ago

Built this in Middle school years ago in Germany. Teacher was building one so I just went along. Pretty much built watever you wanted.

Didn’t know much at the time, but looking back, I see all the waste I created. The back room was filled with nothing but rough mahogany. tons of it. Remember I was a kid who didn’t know any better (blame the teacher he did it too) so don’t get too mad at me, but to get the size I needed….. I planed it down to size. Thickness didn’t matter.
I built two shelves but ended up only needing 1. So have and extra shelf laying on the bottom (3rd and 4th Picture). You can still see the jointer marks from the shelf in picture 3. Goes to show you how much I didn’t know. Don’t know what the back panel is. Amazing to look at past projects to see how you used to do things. I’m guessing its was some type of oil for finish, probably tung oil.

A little beat up but still holding up. It has traveled with me to many places around this Planet.

Pyrography Bunny

Had a piece of pine, had a cheap burn tool from walmart, my sister brought in the Velveteen Robbit and this was the result. Its just on a piece of pine. Burn tool doesn’t work too well on pine just for the record. Painted it with some craft paint. Thinkning on investing on a real woodburning tool. I think I like burning designs, might be my new hobby. Walmart burn tool really awkward to hold and use.
This is my first Pyrography work? project? thingy?

Pallet Wood from work

Got this from one of the wooden pallets at work. Unsure of the species, look like the texture of maple or cherry but could be anything really.

This is the top half of it.

From time to time I find some interesting looking wood amond these pallets.

Any ideas on what to make with it. Only 1 board.

My first veneer attempt.

Christmas Approaching, Sister wanted an iPod. So I got her one… out of wood. She was ecstatic for a split second. Then gave her the real iPod. She showed her friends, and they kept pressing buttons asking, “Have you charged it yet?”

I only had a few days before Christmas before I thought of this idea, so had little time to make it. Even took the vacuum bag to work.

Have any of you made a gag gift wooden or not?

Select Pine back
ebonized maple veneer front
curly maple slider front
Lacewood screen
Burned in writting (Hobby burner, ouch, need a real burner… Probably buy one from Lee Valley)

Box top is made from a piece scrap curly or flame maple. Darker wood is has unfortunately slipped my mind. From what I remember I was told it came from Hawaii. Starts with a K. Not Koa. Sounds like Kiwa or Kwila but I think there should be a Y in there somewhere. Made this in a Woodcraft class to learn the ins and outs of box making. Bottom is felt (I added this later at home). Has Brusso Hinges.
