I live in Bend Oregon and I am in need of some 6/4 black walnut. Wondering if anyone has experience with purchasing 6/4 walnut at around $6 bd/ft. I have no problem ordering online, but shipping can be expensive. Any direction would help

Hey Aric,

I’m a little North of you, but $6/bdft is not that bad. As you probably know, it’s one of the more beautiful hard woods that only needs a clear, protective coat to create a spectacular finish. I rank it up there with white oak and mahogany as one of my faves. If you’re building a large piece, then I might be willing to shop around/drive, but otherwise that’s right in the ballpark. I’ve found it for a little less and a whole lot more.

Aric,

If you’re willing to drive to Portland, you’ve got a couple of options for walnut:

Crosscut Hardwoods

Goby Walnut

Goby has got some amazing slabs of walnut, so be prepared to drool. Crosscut carries just about everything, including walnut, though its walnut selection isn’t quite as drool-worthy as Goby.

I realize that going over the passes at this time of year can be a problem, but after Tuesday, the weather is supposed to dry out and clear up, so the highway should be in decent shape. If you bring a trailer and stock up, it will be worth the trip.

I live in Tigard, Oregon and have been buying a few boards of 6/4 walnut for some chopping block gifts. I bought it at Hardwood Industries in Tualatin/Sherwood. I paid $9xx pbf. Their web site says they have a location in Bend. Their warehouse is big, but they sell to hobbyists like me at their will call area.

Have your say...
