New workshop

Well I have just uploaded a lot of pictures to the workshop section under my profile but needed more space for another couple of pics.

First picture is of my two main lathes; The smaller of the two is mainly used for pen making and other small projects (key chains, perfume atomosers, etc.); The larger lathe is my main work horse for large projects.

Behind the smaller lathe will be mounted my lathe tools when my order of rare earth magnets come in. Beneigth the smaller lathe is my air compressor – I have yet to make a hood for it. I located it here as I tend to use the compressor a lot when turning.

The final picture is of my Shopsmith Mark V. Behind is my main Router table which I used to make the cupboard doors that are under my ‘blackwood kitchen’ in projects.

There is a lot more pictures to view under ‘workshop’ in my profile. Feel free to have look amd comment upon them.

Blackwood Kitchen

I think this looks great. I have always loved darker woods to lighter woods. The challenge was the kitchen is quite small and narrow, but needed sufficient storage to everything.

The units them selves are mass produced carcasses sold at the local hardware store with 1/4” Blackwood veneer. The doors and hutch are solid Blackwood.

The doors were a lot easier to make once you have set up the right kind of jig.

I will have to strip out a section under the oven once we get a new oven/stove – (a while away as the one we want if $4340 when it is on special!!!). However this is not a problem as the unit under the current stove/oven is modular – not sure what I will do with said module but it is better than destroying it.

I want to replace the bench tops with more Blackwood but there is only so far a limited budget will go – for now it is functional.

Book shelf

This was my second ever project. My partner and I have alway been stuck with ‘flat pack’ furniture as we could not afford the $ for decent book shelves. It took me a weekend to make and about 1 week to stain and sand and stain and sand and… you get the idea. Then it was relegated to stay in the workshop for another week so the smell of the varnish and stain had dissipated.

Made from simple pine the stain, I feel, worked well and is a dark mahogany stain. My, then, 6yo curled up in the shelves to test there strength.

Things I learned

- making big objects is fun but you need help getting them into the house after :P

- It is better to dry fit first than have to make on the fly adjustments.

- I needed more practice with the router!

- It is worth while spending the $ on a decent router and bits.

Jewelery box

I made this for my sister who has a lot of jewelery but never had a jewelery box. It was made fairly early on in my woodworking journey but I liked it. It is unstained as my sister wanted to choose the stain. It took me about a total of 3 hours not including drying time for the glue.

Most the joints are butt joints as I did not feel confident enough to do dove tails at the time – that has changed. I will make her another one soon.

Things I learned -1) flocking is a very messy job and you should wear a mask to prevent sneezing. 2) Even when not running router bits can still cut your fingers! 3) I wish I had done this in a more exotic timber.
