Weird looking cherry? - 12 replies

The photo shows a piece of cherry with a weird looking grain. I have several pieces of this and am using it for a small table top. My best guess is that there are small burls inclusions in the cherry. The figure goes all the way through the board. Does anyone know for sure what this is and what caused it?
