Been a long while since I got a nice commission like this. The "Rampant Lion" is based on a Scottish Coat of Arms which is the subject of my collector. He gave me nothing more than a piece of clip-art that he wanted reproduced as a carving in the round.
I've started the carving with a clay maquette, used to help realize the design of the carving in 3 dimensions. I just glued up the basswood block this morning and will post entries as I progress through the woodcarving.

Your Lion is amazing and thank for posting the armature. I am getting started in clay again after so many years, I keep mis-shaping my armatures and adjust them while working on it.. sigh… so… I am so excited that you are going to blog a project. I stalked your website and you inspired me to hire a model for figure studies in clay and started to dry four 3ft long sections of poplar for carving. I am far back on the curve, but it does feel like riding a bike. Thank you.
