Been a long while since I got a nice commission like this. The “Rampant Lion” is based on a Scottish Coat of Arms which is the subject of my collector. He gave me nothing more than a piece of clip-art that he wanted reproduced as a carving in the round.

I’ve started the carving with a clay maquette, used to help realize the design of the carving in 3 dimensions. I just glued up the basswood block this morning and will post entries as I progress through the woodcarving.

Each one will be a little different but all will be holding a bottle of wine (some hidden behind them) and all will appear a little tipsy. I am carving as many as I can before Christmas. I’ll paint them as a group just before the big day.

Here is the start of the first bracket. It is modeled after an Atlantes which is an architectural adornment.
