Just thought I’d share some thoughts and pictures of my trip out west to Sonora Woodworks in Roll, Arizona.

My wife, my boys and I decided to take a trip out to Roll since we were already at UCI in Irvine, California attending a S.T.E.M and Manufacturing technology Conference at UC Irvine. The 5 hour drive was definitely worth it. The sawmill in based on a working 4000 acre farm and the owner showed us the time of our life. Even the wife and boys had a good time. Most sawmills are very impersonal and very stiff. Charles was easy going and would sit down and talk woodworking and wood for hours. I had a chance to meet with a couple other LJ’s while I was there as well. Being from PA the Arizona desert was an experience I’ll not likely forget anytime soon. The various desert woods are also like nothing I’ve ever seen and I’ve been making fine furniture from exotics for 16 years. If you are interested in making rustic furniture or want some awesome looking wood be sure to check out Arizona desert woods the grain patterns and textures are definitely a domestic exotic. I made sure to pick up some ironwood to take back to PA and will be ordering some of the other woods down the road. I wish I hadn’t had to fly back to PA or more wood would have followed me home.

Robert, nice seeing an Eastern guy in the desert in late June, or was that July? Wait till August. It’s really hot then. Bet that’ll make you think twice about visiting in the summer. As I said, it was a pleasure meeting you. Hope you come out again, but do it in January when we’re in the mid 70’s.

Charles sure was nice, wasn’t he. He had the time to answer all my dumb questions. I hope to get up there soon, as I need to get some 14” 5/4 Mesquite….......... Jerry (in Tucson)
