Side Rails will be redwood 2×6 and a 2×4 glued up. Wasn’t my first choice but I did have the wood already. If I beat up the tops that bad.. I’ll probably just glue one some hardwood… or… make another one. :)

I found 2 of these beams in the dumpster at my work. These will be my legs. They measure about 8.5 inches wide by 2 3/8… they were 42 inches long.

First cut into one of the beams… Wow.. looks very pretty… almost wish I wasnt using them for just legs

Here’s the star of the workbench!!!!
I found a wilton vise on craigslist, no use, The guy had it sitting outside. The jaws are 10 inches wide… and it opens up to 12 inches. This is going on one side of my bench.
I can’t really tell which model this one is.. BUT, if its the one I think it is… then I scored HUGE!!!... Actually… either way I look at it.. I got a great deal. only 60 bucks.

here’s a pic of the quick release …. this thing is beastly HEAVY. AND built like a tank!
needs a little clean up… nothing a little elbow grease can’t handle.

Nice man, great to see someone on Lj’s building Alan’s bench. I’ve watched a lot of his channel, I like his pragmatic approach to everything. Good teacher as well.
Great choice for a bench, good luck!

Thanks woodcox. I recently discovered askwoodman and I’ve been watching a lot of his youtube channel. There is a ton of information to be had from him. I spent a few years in Austin, Tx (where Alan says he’s from) and I wish I was into woodworking and knew of him during that time. I would have enjoyed meeting him in person. That would have been time better spent than hitting the bars….. ;)

Have your say...
