Woodworking in America conference - report - 11 replies
My son Troy and I just returned from this conference. It was not anything at all like the “entourage” woodworking shows. Yes there was a vendors hall where you could “lighten you wallet”, and many vendors reported record sales, but this was not in any way the main part of the conference. We found our three days packed ...

Woodcraft dissapoints - 48 replies
Woodcraft used to be one of my favorite places. Last week I purchased their 20 piece router bit set. The description extolled high grade German carbide and Japenese bearings. The package arrived yesterday – I opened it up – guess what…......it said “made in China”. I called Woodcraft’s customer service and ...

Jointing long boards - 4 replies
This past Summer, a shelving project for a long walk-in closet required boards 98 1/2” x 14”. In order to accomplish this I had to joint and glue several long boards. One would think that it would be necessary to do this jointing on an 8” or larger jointer. However, not all of us have the space (or budget) for such a large and ...

Choose the right plywood - 14 replies
I used to be able to go to almost any supplier, order plywood by the letters such as “A/C”, and get plywood of consistent quality. Those days are gone. We now have a market flooded with low quality imported plywood that has been the subject of several recent postings. Hoping to stay above the politics of the matter, and the China ...

Yankee screw driver - 9 replies
Even though I now have cordless drills, one of the handiest hand tools in my collection through the years is a Yankee screw driver. I found a nice one at a yard sale that I plan to put in my “Workshop in the Woods” this Spring. However I need to have the special slotted bits for this tool. Does anyone know where to purchase Yankee sc...

Norm on PBS - 10 replies
I watched Norm briefly on Saturday as he was making a doughbox out of reclaimed pine. Frankly, I thought that some of his table saw working methods were a little scary. He doesn’t use a guard, and sometimes it looked as if his hands were rather close to the blade. He squared off one end of a board on a sled, and then removed the sled, t...

SCAM - 25 replies
I just received a PM from a joymm (firstname.lastname@example.org). Has anyone else received this message? If so, I hope that no one has replied to this me...

Lake Superior Ice Phenomenon - 8 replies
While the ice usually forms at the shoreline, the expanse of the lake is open water. With the wind in the right direction, driving waves under the shoreline ice, water “squirts” up through faults and forms an “Ice Volcano”.
