I’m new here at LumberJocks. I’ve set my workshop up in a 40’ shipping container. The first two photos show the left side – jointer, planer, radial arm saw. The next three show the right side – downdraft table, bandsaw, CNC router, table saw. The last photo is my “dust extractor room.” It sits inside a 4×4 room I built that’s sealed up by the left-hand container door. It is set up to either vent outside when the weather is perfect or return through 3 stages of filters so I don’t waste air conditioning or heat. All the tools are set up so they’re either at the same elevation – so work pieces can pass out of the planer and move over the jointer platforms, for example – or so they don’t interfere with each other. I buy my lumber in 14’ planks so the radial arm saw has 20’ of uninterrupted access along the left wall for cutting the planks into usable lengths. I put a second (third) door in the back left-hand side so I can get heavy, long and cumbersome things into the shop without manuevering over the tools. It also gives excellent ventilation when the weather’s acceptably “balmy.” I”ve got 110, 220 VAC, air conditioning and heat. You can see the “furnace” in the far right corner. It’s a telephone repairman manhole ventilator/heater. I’ll be putting ducting up in the corner along the right side when the weather cools off and I start using the heater.

I’ve never seen a shipping container with a floor lamp!! ;-)
Welcome from a newbie – even though I joined a year ago. You’ll find the folks here to be amazing. And there’s no lack of “personality”!!

I love this picture but do you actually fire this up in there? I can tell you without a doubt that if I tried something like that in our living room I would get yelled at for sure! My wife, to whom I have been married for 33 years, would not tolerate even the thought of dust getting into HER living room. :)
Your shop sounds interesting. I am looking forward to seeing pictures of it when you get the chance to post them.

HEHE, Scott, I’m not married! And it was only “at home” until I got it all tuned up, squared and the bugs woked out. Now it resides in my workshop.

This is a nice set up in which you have to work. It is well organized and having both heating and cooling in there is great. That is something that most of us have to forgo. I also like what you are doing with your dust collector. This helps reduce the noise that comes from the tool.
You have a nice shop. Thanks for posting the pictures. I enjoyed the tour.

Pretty neat! I think using shipping containers for shops, houses, or anything is pretty neat. I plan on ustilizing a few of them someday…

I love the idea of a shipping container for a shop. My table saw would be very crimped in there. It’s got a sliding table on one side and a router table on the other.
But having a linear movement around the edge of the shop looks like a workable goal.

Thanks for all the comments and kudos guys. I just got done automating my dust collector system. I was constanly running around looking for the blast gates I had forgotten to close so I added a switch next to the dust collector power switch that closes all the blast gates at once. Now I simply push the button as I’m shutting off the dust collector and voila!, all my blast gates are closed. Saves me countless steps and minutes looking for the open blast gates. The dust collecotr is on 3-way switches, one at the end and one in the middle, so I don’t have to go far to turn it on and off.
