Landon's Toybox #8: Swiss Cheese never looked so good :o)

« Part 7: Production work completed, the only thing left is S&S...well almost Part 8 of Landon's Toybox series Part 9: Started Staining »

In the last episode of how not to install toybox lid supports, I was armed with the proper installation measurements but still a little worried that it might not work again. So I made a mock up of small pieces to mimic a box lid using the lid supports. It took two tries to get the placement just right, the measurements were not working out. So feeling confident that I had finally put this issue behind me, I removed the lid support from the mock up and proceeded to make swiss cheese out of the lid. After several attempts to get the support placement correct, I gave up. A man has to know his limitations and this lid support was mine. I went back to Rockler and told my sob story to one of the helpful workers (poor guy tried to get away from me as quickly as he could, I didn’t blame him). I found another style of lid support and decided to give it one last try. I made another mock up and really liked the way the new mechanism worked, so the only question was if I could get it installed properly. It took only one try on the toybox and it works perfectly. Good thing, I was ready to cut off the last board from the top and install a new one to hide all the holes I had put into the lid trying to mount the old support in the proper location. Here is a video of the lid support in action.

Now I have to go back and fill in the swiss cheese holes and start sanding. I also made a rolling frame to move the toybox in and out of the garage; it was getting to heavy to keep lifting on and off of the table saw top. The rolling frame also makes it easier to sand and stain the toybox.

I recently purchased a new table saw (RIGID 3660) but don't have the room to put it in the garage yet. So since I am done cutting wood for this project, I have taken apart my old saw to get it ready for my BIL to pick up this weekend. Photobucket

You can see where the center of my garage is made of dirt, the plywood is how I kept the table saw out of the water that comes in when it rains. I plan on fully cementing in the garage floor before setting up the new table saw.

It is going to be a while before I get back to the toybox, I am going out of town on a business trip for 10 days next week, bummer.

The video nicely illustrates how the lid closes slowly. Do you recall the Rockler part number for the lid support? Any other advice on installation?

Roger: the Rockler item# is 69732, soft down support. The measurements are in metric so you will need a ruler that reads in mm. The directions can also be downloaded at the Rockler website. The directions shown are for a right side mounted support. I put mine on the left side so there was a lot of triple and quadruple measuring to make sure I had the placement correct. I made a small mockup and installed it there first, which did seem to make it easier.

Can’t wait to get back from the trip to finish the toybox, cement in the garage floor, then setup the new saw. One leg of my flight is over 11hrs so I am taking the ts manual with me to read ;o)
