Landon's Toybox #7: Production work completed, the only thing left is S&S...well almost

« Part 6: Back on, bead board rail caps on and top down, getting closer... Part 7 of Landon's Toybox series Part 8: Swiss Cheese never looked so good :o) »

I sanded down the top and replaced the piano hinge with 3 non mortise hinges and they work much better:

Also added the back leg stretcher and I did chamfer the tops of the back legs instead of rounding them over; used my small block plane to make the chamfers:

I added finish trim to the bottom of the inside, which also acts to hold the bottom of the bead board tight and flush to the frame:

I tried installing the lid supports but that didn’t work out; for some reason they were not allowing the lid to close all the way. I verified the measurements\placement of the lid support screws matched the label but it obvisiously wasn’t in the right place. I moved the upper placement and it got better, but it is still not correct. So I am going to look for a different style lid support than what I was using. I can’t keep trying different positions, the lid will end up looking like swiss cheese ;o)
Once the lid support issue is behind me, then it’s on to S&S, oh joy.

not sure if you’ve seen it already – but Rockler, and Lee Valley (and I’m sure others as well) both carry a hinge that keeps its position like a laptop hinge does. no need for lid support, and no fingers to be banged. might be worth checking out.

looks great so far. I’m a big chamfer fan – much faster, quieter, and easier to get the block plane out and get it done than start playing with a router.

Hmmm, I haven’t seen that hinge type before, looks like I am off to web to investigate…the lid supports did come from Rockler, thanks for the info.

Edit: okay after some research at Rockler, I found that the mounting instruction drawing that came with the lid support was not fully accurate. The website had the actual application that I am using and the screw hole locations\measurements are definitely different than what was on the package. So tomorrow I should be able to get the supports installed correctly, keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks again Purp for the advice, otherwise I would have never looked into the the lid support any further, you da man!
