Segmented Rapier Handle with a tilt

I made a handle for my wife’s Darkwood Pappenheimer sword for SCA Rapier combat. I had some extra stock left over from my first handle that I also posted here. This time when I cut the slices, I did so with a 5 degree angle on the miter gauge and rotated the stock for every cut. Maybe 5 degrees is too subtle, maybe I’ll do it next time at 10 degrees. The last picture is the same sword with the handle it came with.

Segmented Rapier Handle

My wife and I enjoy Rapier combat within the Society of Creative Anachronism www.SCA.org. I’ve taken to include my woodworking hobby into this hobby. Just about every maker of swords that we can use to fence with has a very plain handle. I’ve taken to sprucing up these overlooked areas of adornment. The handle is made from walnut and maple. I used surgical grade rubber tubing to clamp the segments together and it worked out really well as a clamp. I then cut the slices off with the table saw, drilled a small hole down the center of each slice and used a metal rod to help keep the alignment of the slices from slipping off center. After it was dry I shaped the handle on my belt sander. I use Deft Gloss spray as the finish.
